Swarthmore Stops Women's Lax

LAKE BUENA VISTA, Fla. - Swarthmore College scored six goals in each half Monday afternoon to defeat Shenandoah University 12-4 in non-conference women's lacrosse action.

Swarthmore (1-0) got three goals from Megan Speare and two each from Athena Samaras and Megan Sanborn to send Shenandoah (1-1) to defeat at Disney's Wide World of Sports Complex.

SU answered with two goals by sophomore Melissa Bryant and one each by classmate Lauren Carpinello and junior Lauren Prentice, but it was not enough against the Lady Garnet.

Hornets keepers Wendy Taylor and Jessica Young combined for 14 saves; Taylor had nine stops in 26 minutes before Young took over with four minutes to play in the first. Each woman gave up six goals.

Swarthmore outshot Shenandoah 26 to 11 but held just a 24-23 advantage in groundballs. Carpinello had five groundballs while Erika Bradd chipped in four and Courtney Beard and Heather Lethbridge had three each. Lethbridge also had nine caused turnovers.

SU will be in the Sunshine State until Thursday afternoon. They scrimmage Villa Julie Wednesday morning before playing Washington (Md.) in a match on Thursday at 9:00 a.m.
