WINCHESTER, Va. - Methodist College staged a furious comeback Friday afternoon to steal a 13-12 double overtime victory in USA South Conference women's lacrosse action.
MC (5-7, 2-2 USA South) scored the final four goals of regulation and got the only OT tally to escape against Shenandoah (6-4, 2-2 USA South).
Trailing 12-8 after the Hornets'Â
Joia Davis scored an unassisted goal at the 10:20 mark, the Lady Monarchs kicked it into another gear. Methodist won the ensuing draw control, leading to a Lauren McGonagle goal at the 9:38 mark.
Unfortunately for the Hornets, this would prove to be an omen of things to come.
MC won all but one of the remaining draw controls, including all three in the six minute overtime. The nearly total possession of the final 10 minutes led to free position goals at the 8:19, 4:35 and 3:25 marks, the last, by Katelyn Cushman, tied at game at 12-12.
The Lady Monarchs were a perfect 4 for 4 on the day in free position attempts while Shenandoah failed in all three of its tries.
McGonagle got what proved to be the game winner 30 seconds into the first overtime after Cushman won the draw and got the ball to McGonagle to set up a play behind the cage. McGonagle dodged right and beat SU keeperÂ
Wendy Taylor low for her sixth goal of the afternoon, giving her club its first lead of the afternoon.
Up until the 5-0 MC run, the hosts had dominated the contest. Shenandoah scored 51 seconds into the game, led at the half 5-4 and after Davis completed her hat trick at the 10:20 mark, held its largest lead at 12-8.
Davis,Â
Kelly Matagiese andÂ
Melissa Bryant all had three goals for the Hornets with Davis and Matagiese each dishing out an assist.
McGonagle led all scorers with six goals and two assists while Lindsey West and Cushman added two goals apiece.
