DANVILLE, Va. - Third seeded Christopher Newport University used a strong second inning to send No. 6 Shenandoah into the USA South Conference Tournament loser's bracket with a 14-1 victory Friday afternoon at Dan Daniel Park.

CNU (23-10) scored 10 runs on four hits in the second inning to chase Shenandoah (20-17) starter Keith Fritz. Fritz (3-4) gave up six runs on three hits and three walks before yielding to Drew Dobbins seven batters into the second.

Unfortunately, the Captains weren't finished. CNU eventually hung a 10-spot on the Hornets as they sent 16 men to the plate; the Captains then got three more in the fifth and one in the sixth before the game was called due to the tournament mercy rule in the seventh.

David Jenkins had given SU an early 1-0 advantage with an RBI single in the first that scored Daniel Ziccardy. This would prove to be one of just three hits that Shenandoah would get off of Captains starting and winning pitcher Mike Cosby (5-2).

Cosby struck out 12 batters, including one in every frame and two in the 1st, 2nd, 4th, 5th and 6th innings to put SU into an elimination game tomorrow at 10:00 a.m. against the loser of the No. 1 Methodist vs No. 3 Greensboro contest.

Christopher Newport next plays this evening at 7:45 against No. 2 Ferrum. The loser of that game plays at 1:15 against No. 5 NC Wesleyan in another elimination contest.

Rob Quinn and Ricky Medina were both 3 for 4 for the Captains.
