DANVILLE, Va. - No. 5 Greensboro answered a late Shenandoah rally with one of its own Saturday morning to take a 5-3 USA South Conference Tournament decision at Dan Daniel Park.
The loss ends the tournament for Shenandoah (20-18). SU began the tourney with a 1-0 victory over Averett, but lost 14-1 Friday to CNU to be put into the elimination game against Greensboro (20-13).
Trailing 2-0 heading into the fifth, the Hornets took a 3-2 lead with one run in the fifth and two more in the sixth. The go-ahead run came with one out as sophomoreÂ
Daniel Ziccardy executed a perfect suicide squeeze to bring homeÂ
Steven Todd from third base. Todd had singled to center to moveÂ
Bobby Anthony into scoring position;Â
Scott Disch then plated Anthony with a single to left.
Unfortunately, GC answered the SU rally with three runs on one hit and a Hornets error in the bottom of the frame. Jeremy Morrison provided the big blow in the frame with a two-run single to right center off ofÂ
Nick Sborz (1-3). Sborz took the loss in relief ofÂ
Jason Burgess, who gave up three runs on five hits and four walks in five innings of work. After Burgess walked Greensboro leadoff hitter Chad Alligood to start the sixth, Shenandoah skipperÂ
Kevin Anderson went to Sborz.
Adam Duckett was 3 for 5, Ziccardy 2 for 3 and Disch 2 for 4 to lead the Hornets offense.
