WINCHESTER, Va. – Shenandoah University equaled its baseball win total from a season ago with a doubleheader sweep over Catholic University of America Wednesday evening.
Shenandoah (23-18) was a 10-7 winner in game one before junior
Gerry Sasse scattered seven hits in the 5-1 nightcap triumph.
Catholic falls to 11-21 with the two losses.
SU jumped out to a big lead in game one with five runs in the first, but needed a four-run rally in the fifth to clinch the victory.
Leading 6-5 heading into the fifth, the Hornets had four of their five hits and all four of the runs after making the second out of the frame. Sophomore
Daniel Ziccardy provided the big blow with a triple to left center that scored
Bobby Anthony before
David Jenkins plated Ziccardy on an infield single.
Catholic reached reliever
Drew Dobbins for an unearned run in the seventh before coach
Kevin Anderson turned to closer
Nick Sborz to finish out the contest. Sborz snuffed out the potential rally by inducing two infield outs and earn his eighth save of the season in the process.
Freshman
Jason Byrne improved to 5-1 by striking out three in four innings of work. After giving up five runs (three earned) on eight hits, he gave way to Dobbins to start the fifth.
Ziccardy led the offense with a 3 for 3 performance while Jenkins and Anthony were each 2 for 3.
Adam Kuchemba did not have a hit, but he drove in a game-high three runs.
Game two was decided early as the Hornets answered the Cardinals run in the top of the first with two in the bottom of the inning and one more in the second. Ziccardy opened the first with a triple and came home on a Jenkins groundout to tie the score.
Kuchemba followed with a single to left center and then gave his club a lead it would not relinquish when
Adam Duckett plated him with a double into the rightfield corner.
Sasse worked through a couple of jams in the first three innings, but was dominant as the game wore on. He allowed just two hits after the third, and got eight of the last nine outs of the game in order.
He improved to 5-4 on the year with the complete game win – he struck out seven while walking just two.
