WINCHESTER, Va. - Shenandoah University set a new school record for USA South baseball wins in a season in fine fashion Sunday afternoon - the Hornets salvaged a split of their series with No. 6 Methodist with a 3-2 game two victory.
After Methodist (21-8, 10-5 USA South) came back from eight runs down to win game one 11-9, juniorÂ
Keith Fritz pitched the Hornets (16-13, 8-10 USA South) into the split by scattering nine hits in the complete game win.
Fritz improved to 3-3 on the spring by striking out five against the nine hits and three walks. With the tying run on third and two out, Fritz ended the contest by striking out shortstop David Hoffman on a 1-2 curveball.
Shenandoah got what proved to be the game-winning run in the top of the eighth inning when catcherÂ
Adam Kuchemba drove inÂ
Scott Disch with a sacrifice fly to deep centerfield. Disch had opened the inning with a single and moved into scoring position on an error.
The game two victory allowed SU to both avoid being swept in a league series for the first time this season and to set a new school record for league wins in a season. The eight victories surpasses both the 2000 and 2004 teams, which each won seven contests.
SU jumped out to an 8-0 lead in game one by scoring three runs in the first and five more in the second, but the Monarchs got back into it with four in the third and three in both the fifth and seventh. Reliever Casey Varnell benefited from the 11-hit attack by earning the victory with six innings of relief.
Blake Maxwell got the save by retiring the final six batters in order.
Shenandoah had 12 hits in the game, withÂ
Adam Duckett driving in three runs in a 3 for 5 afternoon. He was one of four SU players who had at least two hits -Â
David Jenkins ,Â
Preston Tarleton andÂ
Matt McCormickjoined him in this group.
