Football Takes Down Pride

GREENSBORO, N.C. – Shenandoah University earned its first USA South Conference football victory since the final game of the 2004 season with a 36-10 win at Greensboro College Saturday night.

The win was also the first-ever for Shenandoah (2-4, 1-2 USA South) in Greensboro. The Pride (2-4, 1-2) had taken five of the previous lifetime meetings, including all three played at Jamison Stadium.

SU wasted little time in turning the tables on Greensboro; the Hornets took a 13-0 less than 10 minutes into the contest by forcing a fumble on a GC punt return and then blocking a Pride punt. The two special teams plays resulted in Shenandoah having to travel a grand total of 25 yards for its first two scores.

Junior Paul Diggs gave the Hornets the early lead as he blasted over from the 2-yard line at the 11:38 mark of the first. Diggs' run capped just a two-play drive – Shenandoah's Anthony Hayes had given his club the ball on the Pride 6 when he forced a Rod Hill fumble following a 42-yard punt by Chris Dooley.

Special teams magic struck again for SU on Greensboro's next possession as the Hornets set a new school record with their third blocked punt of the year. Freshman Steven Rice got the Chris Palme punt, and Diamond Rich returned the ball to the Pride 19. On third down, senior Brandon Lacey raced 17 yards around right end to make it 13-0 in favor of the visitors.

Diggs made it 20-0 early in the second quarter as he completed a 10-play, 59 yard drive with a 3-yard run.

After GC got on the board with a 30-yard Chris Palme field goal, Shenandoah drove to the Pride 27 before missing a 45-yard field goal as the first half ended.

After the forcing three turnovers in the first half, SU intercepted a pair of Pride passes and forced another fumble after the break. The final turnover, an interception by Hayes on the Hornets 5, went for a school record 95-yard interception return for touchdown.

Diggs led all rushers with 120 yards on 30 carries while Lacey added 70 yards on 22. The Hornets held the ball for 40:17 seconds and were a perfect five for five in the red zone.

The Hornets host NC Wesleyan next Saturday at 4:00 in a homecoming contest.
