ANNVILLE, Pa. - Shenandoah University got a game-winning jumper from senior
Alicia Sanders with 1.1 seconds remaining to down host Lebanon Valley in the championship game of the Rinso Marquette Tournament Sunday afternoon.
The win gives SU (2-0) the program's first in-season tournament championship since winning its own tournament during the 2002-03 season.
Trailing 27-18 at the half, the Hornets chipped away at the Flying Dutchwomen (1-1) but still trailed by six points after LVC's Monica Johnson hit a jumper with 8:19 remaining.
Unfortunately for the hosts, it would be the final points they would score in the contest.
Shenandoah scored the final eight points of the game, the last on a Sanders jumper in the lane with 1.1 seconds left, to earn the championship.
Lebanon Valley immediately called time to set up a possible game-winning play, but freshman
Alexis Hargbol intercepted the pass at mid-court to seal the win.
Following its final bucket, LVC missed five shots from the field and committed eight turnovers, including two shot-clock violations. SU didn't begin to cut into the deficit until sophomore
Stephanie Harrold canned a pair of free throws with 4:23 left, but scored on three of its final four possessions.
Sanders, who led all scorers with 17 points, was named the tournament MVP for her efforts. She opened the tournament with facility record-tying 33 points in an 81-77 win over Pitt-Greensburg Saturday night. Hargbol joined her on the All-Tourney team.
The victory also gives the program its best start since the 1996-97 team opened that campaign with a Hollins College Tournament championship.
