HAMPDEN-SYDNEY, Va. - Shenandoah University won its first in-season tournament championship of the 2006-07 season Saturday afternoon with a 94-92 victory over Albright College in Hampden-Sydney's Car Coop/Weenie Miller Holiday Classic.
JuniorÂ
Jeremiah Lawrence led the Hornets (5-5) to the win with 25 points and six rebounds to earn tournament MVP honors. Lawrence was joined on the All-Tournament team by seniorÂ
Moutkar Fawehinmi and sophomoreÂ
Lenzie Adams.
Fawehinmi had 18 points and five boards in the championship win over Albright (3-7), while Adams added 15 points and a career-high eight assists. Adams played in all 80 minutes of the two-game tourney.
Shenandoah scored a season-best 55 points in the first half against the Lions, but then had to hold on as AC put up 54 of its own following the break. The Lions shot an even 50 percent in that second half, but made 19 of 22 free throw attempts to get back in it.
As with the Hornets opening game win over host Hampden-Sydney, coachÂ
Robert Harris'Â club needed some last second heroics to secure the victory. It was Lawrence doing the honors on Saturday, as his jumper off an assist from Adams with three seconds remaining sealed the win. Albright had tied it five seconds earlier on a Matt Kieselowsky layup.
Lawrence' bucket gave Shenandoah its third in-season championship of the Harris era and the first win at tournament away from Shenandoah since the team won the Villa Julie College Tournament in the 1998-99 season.
Harris' two previous championships both came in the SU Apple Tip-Off Classic.
Box ScoreÂ
Shenandoah returns to action on Wednesday with a home game against Division II Davis & Elkins College. Game time is 6:00.
