GREENSBORO, N.C. – The Shenandoah University women's basketball team completed its regular season Saturday afternoon with another heartbreaking loss; this time it was Greensboro College in a 71-68 USA South Conference victory.
Regular season champion Greensboro (18-7, 12-2 USA South) got a Staci Humphrey three-pointer with 27 seconds left to give the Pride a 69-68 lead over SU (8-17, 4-10).
Following a time-out, junior
Alicia Sanders then turned the ball over driving the baseline with eight seconds remaining. Sanders immediately fouled Humphrey on the in-bounds pass and the senior made both of her free throws to provide the final margin of victory.
Up until Humphrey's last second three-ball, it looked as if Shenandoah was going to be able to knock off the two-time defending champions. Trailing 62-57 with 5:54 remaining, the Hornets went on a 5-0 run to tie it with 4:21 left. The two teams stayed within four points of one another the rest of the way, and SU took its first lead since the 18:21 mark of the first by going on a 6-0 run from the 3:19 to 1:13 marks.
Senior
Joia Davis gave the visitors that lead on a three-pointer with 1:13 to play, and Shenandoah had an opportunity to expand upon the lead when Humphrey missed a jumper at the other end but Sanders came up short on the shot. SU rebounded this miss but turned the ball over following a timeout with 37 seconds remaining.
Sanders led the Hornets with 21 points while
Netagia Foreman added 12. Humphrey led all scorer with 27.
