NEWPORT NEWS, Va. – Third-seeded Ferrum College ended No. 7 Shenandoah University's dream of a USA South Conference women's basketball championship with an 80-69 semi-final round victory Friday night at Christopher Newport.

Ferrum (14-12) now moves on to face top-seeded Greensboro College in Saturday's finals. The Pride defeated Peace College in the first semi-final of the day Friday.

Leading 33-25 late in the first half following a pair of Valerie Samples free throws, Shenandoah (9-18) saw the Lady Panthers seize control of the contest with a 19-5 run over the final 5:18 of the half.

Aline Alzime gave FC the lead for good when she converted two free throws with 1:45 remaining. These two points were the first of five consecutive points that the first-team All-USA South Conference performer scored.

SU was able to cut the deficit to just two, 58-56, with 11:14 left on the strength of an 8-3 run in the previous 3:10, but this would be as close as the Hornets would come.

Ferrum scored the next 11 points of the game and Shenandoah would get no closer than seven points the rest of the way.

Junior Cassie Womack led SU with 17 points and 14 rebounds while Netagia Foreman added 16 points, Valerie Samples 14 and Alicia Sanders 13. Sanders finished the year just 13 points from 1000 for her career. When she reaches the mark early next season, she will be the 13th member of the SU women's basketball 1000 point club.

Tawanna McCall had 18 points and Alizme 15 for Ferrum.
