WINCHESTER, Va. - Shenandoah University could not hold an early lead Saturday afternoon in its 2006 women's lacrosse opener and fell 10-9 to Marymount University in non-league action.
The Saints (1-0) erased a three-goal deficit they found themselves 15 minutes into the contest with nine unanswered goals from the 8:33 mark of the first to the 21:21 mark of the second.
Shenandoah (0-1) finally snapped the scoreless streak with aÂ
Kelly Matagiese goal at 20:52, but the hole proved too deep.
Matagiese' tally ingited a 5-0 run that brought the Hornets to within one, 9-8, whenÂ
Lauren Carpinello scored off of a Matagiese assist, but SU would get no closer.
Therese Walsh scored for MU on a free position shot at the 8:22 mark to give the visitors a 10-8 lead and this goal held up as the game-winner.
Matagiese scored her fourth and final goal of the contest at the 7:38 mark, but Marymount held the Hornets to just two shots the rest of the way. Matagiese did have a free position attempt with just over two minutes left, but the attempt went wide.
Walsh and Matagiese shared high scoring honors with four goals apiece with Matagiese also dishing out two assists. SeniorÂ
Erika Bradd backed up Matagiese with two goals and an assist.

Wendy Taylor made 14 saves in the losing effort. Marymount outshot the Hornets 27-22, including 24-13 on goal. Shenandoah, led by Bradd's 12, grabbed 44 of the game's 80 groundballs.
