DANVILLE, Va. - Averett University used a big first half Sunday to earn its first-ever USA South Conference women's lacrosse victory with an 11-3 win over visiting Shenandoah University.

Averett (2-0, 1-0 USA South) jumped out to a 7-1 halftime lead as they scored the first five goals of the contest. Shenandoah (0-2, 0-1) got a Kelly Matagiese tally at the 5:30 mark of the first, but AU answered with another five-goal run that sandwiched the halftime intermission.

Vanessa Jordan had four of these goals for the Cougars; she scored with 3:25 to play in the first and then at 29:08, 25:30 and 24:21 of the second to give the hosts a commanding 10-1 advantage.

Sophomore Jenn Iuliano tallied the next two goals for SU, the second off of Erika Bradd's second assist of the afternoon, but the Hornets would get no closer than seven goals.

Averett outshot its visitors 24-23 for the game while each team scooped up 38 groundballs. 

Cougars goalie Dawn Sheets had 15 saves with Wendy Taylor stopping eight shots for Shenandoah.
