WINCHESTER, Va. - Shenandoah University kept its home baseball record perfect Tuesday afternoon with a 5-1 non-league victory over visiting Eastern Mennonite.
FreshmanÂ
Matthew Davis earned the win in his first collegiate start by giving up one run on five hits in five innings of work. He also walked one and struck out one.
JuniorÂ
Jason Burgess finished up for Davis and he allowed only a two-out bloop ninth inning single to Michael Kniss to earn his first save of the spring.
Shenandoah (5-1) is off to its best start in coachÂ
Kevin Anderson's three seasons at helm of the Hornets. Anderson is also just two wins away from 200 for his college coaching career.
SU got all of the offense it would need in the first three innings as they touched EMU (3-3) starter for two runs on six hits and one walk. The damage could have been worse, but Zollman (0-1) struck out seven batters before being replaced to start the fifth.
The winning runs came in the third when juniorÂ
Ryan Anderson drove in classmateÂ
David Jenkins with a double to left. Jenkins reached when he tripled to right center with one out. These two men also combined for the first run of the game - Jenkins singled to right after having his at-bat extended on a dropped foul ball, advanced to second on a wild pitch and then scored on Anderson's single up with the middle.
After the Royals got on the board with a single run in the fifth,Â
Steven Todd gave the home team an insurance run in the sixth with his second home run of the year, this one a line drive to left-center.
Anderson, Jenkins and Todd all finished the day with two hits, as did juniorÂ
Daniel Bowers. Zachary Hawke had two hits for Eastern Mennonite.
Box Score/Play by PlayÂ
SU is back in action tomorrow afternoon at 3:00 in another non-league contest. Wednesday's opponent is Washington & Lee.
