ROCKY MOUNT, N.C. - The Shenandoah University women's basketball team had another USA South Conference nail-biter Saturday afternoon, but came out on the positive side in a 59-56 victory at NC Wesleyan.
The win snaps a five-game losing streak for the Hornets (6-12, 3-6 USA South) and erases the sour taste of two consecutive defeats in the waning seconds.
Poise under pressure was the difference Saturday as SU nursed a one-possession lead for the final 6:12. During this span, the Hornets made three free throws, had two offensive rebounds that led to points and answered both of their turnovers with immediate steals on the defensive end of the floor.
Wesleyan (2-16, 0-9) got it to within one, 57-56, with 18 seconds left when guard Kimberly High converted a driving layup. Unfortunately for the hosts, Shenandoah successfully advanced the ball into the frontcourt following the High's bucket and the Lady Bishops were forced to foul in order to stop the clock.
Joia Davis made both of her free throws before Cheyenne Hall turned it over on the subsequent in-bounds pass to effectively end the contest.
Wesleyan fouled one more time, puttingÂ
Cassie Womack on the line, but Womack stole the ball from Lauren Thomas after missing the second of her two free throws and the Hornets ran out the clock.Â
Shenandoah outrebounded its hosts 39-37, including a game-high 15 by Womack. She also led the visitors with 14 points while Davis added 12 andÂ
Dee Fisher 10 off the bench.
Liz Ansley had a game-high 21 and April Wilson 20 for the Lady Bishops.Â
