WINCHESTER, Va. - Shenandoah University ran its home baseball winning streak to six games Tuesday afternoon with a 6-2 non-league victory over Washington & Lee University.
SU (6-1) was held to just five hits against the Generals (5-3-1), but combined those five hits with a strong performance from five different pitchers to secure the victory.
The win is also coachÂ
Kevin Anderson's 199th as a college head coach. Anderson will have the first of five straight home opportunities to earn win No. 200 when Pitt-Bradford arrives tomorrow afternoon for a 3:00 start. Anderson's club also hosts Christopher Newport in a three-game USA South Conference set over the weekend before Gettysburg pays a visit to Winchester next Tuesday.
After W&L; took the first lead of the game on a Taylor McConnell solo home run to lead off the fourth, the Hornets pushed across two runs on one hit, a walk and a hit batsman in the bottom of the frame.
JuniorÂ
Steven Todd opened the inning by drawing the walk and moved to second whenÂ
Adam Kuchemba was hit by a pitch. One batter later,Â
Matt McCormick drove home Todd with a single that bounced off the back of the mound and into centerfield.
Daniel Bowers then hit what appeared to be a double play ball to short, but the ensuing relay from second base got past McConnell at first and allowed Kuchemba to trot home with an unearned run.
Shenandoah expanded its lead to 5-1 with three runs on two hits in the sixth - Bowers led off with a double to left center, was sacrificed to third and scored on aÂ
Daniel Ziccardy fielder's choice.
Ziccardy made it 4-1 when he advanced to third on David Jenkins' single to left and Generals reliever Steve Marcott uncorked the second of his two wild pitches. JuniorÂ
Ryan Anderson then capped the sixth-inning scoring by successfully squeezing Jenkins home one batter later.
W&L; and SU traded runs in the seventh to complete the day's scoring - David Miller plated Clayton Edwards with a two-out single up the middle in the top of the frame while Todd answered with a leadoff home run to right in the bottom.
SophomoreÂ
Taylor DuFrene improved to 2-0 by giving up just the one run on two hits and two walks in five innings. He was followed by four pitchers splitting the remaining four innings - sophomoreÂ
Hunter Calloway had the longest stint in this group as he surrendered one runs on four hits in an inning and 2/3.
Miller and James Madden each had two hits for Washington & Lee with John Parker tagged with the loss despite allowing just one hit in four innings. He walked two and struck out one.
