DANVILLE, Va. - Shenandoah University continued its strong start to the 2006 baseball season with a USA South Conference doubleheader sweep over visiting Averett.
Shenandoah (11-3, 4-1 USA South) banged out 11 hits in a 7-4 game one victory before freshmanÂ
Matthew Davis and seniorÂ
Nick Sborzcombined to toss a four-hit shutout in a 1-0 nightcap win.
Davis (2-0) gave up three hits and two walks in seven innings before turning it over to Sborz for the eighth and ninth. Sborz allowed just a two-out single in the eighth to earn his first save of the spring.
Averett (8-11, 1-4 USA South) led game one 4-1 after scoring three runs against SU relieverÂ
Jason Burgess in the fourth, but the Hornets rallied with four runs in the fifth and one more in the sixth.
Shenandoah got what proved to be the game-winning runs in the opening contest whenÂ
David Jenkins tied it with a two-run triple to right center andÂ
Ryan Anderson plated Jenkins on a fielder's choice. JuniorÂ
Daniel Ziccardy, who finished the day a combined 5-for-9 with three RBI, got the rally started with an RBI double down the right field line.
CoachÂ
Kevin Anderson's club got the only run of the nightcap in the sixth. Ziccardy led off with a double to right and following a Jenkins fly out, Ryan Anderson legged out an infield single that scored Ziccardy.
In addition to Ziccardy's five combined hits, Ryan Anderson had four and Jenkins two with two RBI.
