DANVILLE, Va. - Averett University avoided being swept in its USA South Conference baseball series with visiting Shenandoah Sunday afternoon by coming back to take a 4-3 victory.
First place Shenandoah (11-4, 4-2 USA South) led the contest 3-1 after scoring two runs in the fourth, but saw the Cougars rally for three runs in the bottom of the fifth.
AU (9-11, 2-4) got to SU starterÂ
Rhys Wolford (1-1) for the three runs on three hits and three walks. Two of the three walks figured in the scoring - shortstop Cory Moore (who drew the first base on balls) scored the final run of the frame when TJ Bray's drew a pass with the bases loaded and two outs off of relieverÂ
Hunter Calloway.
SU had an excellent chance to tie or take the lead as it placed runners on second and third with one out in the eighth, but Averett starting and winning pitcher Drake Shumate got out of trouble by striking the next two batters out looking.
In the ninth,Â
David Jenkins singled to right withÂ
Daniel Ziccardy on second base, but Ziccardy was cut down at the plate on a perfect throw by Pierce Steinruck.
Shumate went the distance to earn the win - he gave up three runs (two earned) on nine hits and one walk. He also struck out seven hitters.
