WINCHESTER, Va. - Shenandoah University had a season-best start to Wednesday's non-conference baseball game with Randolph-Macon and cruised to a 12-4 non-league victory over the Yellow Jackets.
After giving up one run in the top of the first to R-MC (9-5), SU scored five runs in the bottom of the frame as the Hornets (13-4) sent all nine men to the plate.
Shenandoah added another run in the second along with two more in the third to take a commanding 8-1 lead after three.
Macon scored a pair of runs off of Hornets starterÂ
Jason Burgess (2-0) in the fourth, but would get no closer than five runs the rest of the way. Burgess allowed four runs on seven hits before leaving four batters into the seventh.
Shenandoah got all of the offense it would need in the first by having its first five hitters reach base safely. JuniorÂ
Steven Todd drove in the first run when he was hit by a pitch with the bases loaded - classmateÂ
Ryan Anderson followed with a two-run single up the middle that gave the hosts a lead they would not relinquish.
All three runners on base scored on Anderson's single as the Yellow Jackets threw the ball away trying to cut down Todd at third base which allowed Todd to score and Anderson to move to third.
Adam Duckett put a cap on the inning's scoring when he plated Anderson with a single up the middle.
The Hornets final offensive highlight came from freshmanÂ
Scott Lambert, who hit his second home run of the week when he legged out an inside-the-park job with his shot into the rightfield corner.
Lambert, Duckett,Â
Preston Tarleton andÂ
Matt McCormick all had two hits for SU, with Lambert hitting a double in addition to his sixth inning HR.
Greg Maleski and Rusty Linville were each 2-for-4 for Macon with Linville driving in two runs and Maleski one.
Freshman Charlie Hartt took the loss for the visitors after being touched four eight runs (seven earned) on seven hits in three innings. He walked three and struck out one.
