WINCHESTER, Va. - Ferrum College got a pair of outstanding pitching performances Saturday afternoon to sweep a USA South Conference baseball doubleheader from host Shenandoah.
Ferrum (12-6-1, 6-5 USA South) was a 12-3 winner game one before holding on for a 6-2 victory in the nightcap. The two losses are the first consecutive defeats that Shenandoah (14-6, 4-4) has experienced this season.
Sophomore left-hander Curtis Taylor (4-0) was outstanding in the game one victory - he gave up two runs on seven hits and two walks against nine strikeouts in seven innings.
Taylor was staked to a 4-0 lead before he even threw a pitch as the Panthers sent nine men to the plate in the top of the first against SU starterÂ
Taylor DuFrene (3-1).
The lead ballooned to 11-0 before the Hornets finally got to Taylor with one run in the fifth and another in the sixth. SU got that initial run of the game when juniorÂ
Steven Todd doubled off the wall in right and came home on pitch hitterÂ
Justin Miller's double two batters later.
Todd had two of the hosts nine hits whileÂ
Daniel Ziccardy andÂ
Ryan Anderson were both 2-for-4.
Third baseman Brett Thomas did most of the Panthers offensive damage in the opener - he had two doubles and a home run in a 3-for-5 performance that included three RBI.
FC used a four-run second against Shenandoah starterÂ
Rhys Wolford (2-2) to take a lead they would not relinquish in the nightcap.Â
After Casey Davenport (3-1) allowed just one run on three hits and one walk in seven innings, the Hornets appeared to be ready to rally against Panthers reliever Ryan Cooper.
Cooper retiredÂ
Scott Disch for the first out of the eighth, but then got into trouble when Ziccardy andÂ
David Jenkins both singled to put the tying run at the plate in the form of Ryan Anderson. Anderson came through with an RBI single to right center, but Cooper got out of trouble whenÂ
Adam Duckett lined out to second base andÂ
Adam Kuchemba grounded out.
Ferrum scored a pair of runs in the top of the ninth for some much needed breathing room before Jesse Bowles put the finishing touches on the sweep with a scoreless ninth.
FC second baseman Joshua Tuck was 2-for-4 in the nightcap while Travis Hundley and Nick Baker both drove in a pair of runs. Davenport finished his day with eight strikeouts.
Todd completed his solid doubleheader with another double in game two. For the day, he was a combined 3-for-5 with two RBI and one run scored. He also threw out two of four runners attempting to steal.
