WINCHESTER, Va. - Ferrum College combined another solid pitching performance with some timely hitting Sunday afternoon to finish off a three-game USA South Conference baseball sweep of homestanding Shenandoah with a 13-0 victory.
The contest was halted after seven innings due to the NCAA mercy rule - Ferrum (13-6-1, 7-5 USA South) got to that point by breaking the game open with 11 runs in the fourth through sixth innings.
Shenandoah (14-7, 4-5 USA South) got singles in its first two at-bats against FC starter Jesse Bowles (3-1), but Bowles worked out of the jam and coasted to the win.
Bowles struck out eight hitters and walked just three as he did not allow a hit after those singles by
Daniel Ziccardy and
David Jenkins . He retired SU in order in third, fourth, fifth and sixth innings and ran this streak to 14 batters before
Adam Duckett drew a one-out walk for the Hornets in the seventh.
Offensively, the Panthers turned 2-0 contest into 9-0 lead by scoring seven runs on five hits and one SU error in the fourth. Freshman starter
Matthew Davis (3-1) was chased six batters into the frame - he gave up six runs (four earned) on seven hits and one walk before giving way to
Hunter Calloway with runners on first and third with one out.
Brett Thomas led the visitors with a 2-for-5 afternoon that included two RBI while John Sain and Bowles, who hit for himself in the cleanup spot, also drove in two runs each.
