WINCHESTER, Va. - For the second straight day, Shenandoah University made quick work of its non-conference baseball opponent and turned in blowout victory.
Thursday afternoon, it was Mount Aloysius' turn to be the victim in a 13-1 Shenandoah victory. Also for the second straight day, the game did not make it to the seventh inning stretch as it was called following the Mounties (5-7) seventh turn at-bat due to the NCAA mercy rule.
Shenandoah (16-7) actually trailed 1-0 after Mount Aloysius scored a run via two walks, a single and a balk, but six Hornets runs in the second gave the hosts total control of the contest.
SU sent 11 men to the plate in that inning as they banged out five hits and took advantage of one Mounties error and one hit batsman. SeniorÂ
Matt McCormick provided what proved to be the game-winning RBI when he doubled homeÂ
Adam Duckett with a drive to the rightfield corner. Duckett had tied the game one batter earlier with a double to left center - this scored leadoff hitterÂ
Steven Todd. Todd led off the frame by getting hit by a pitch.
The six runs proved to be more than enough for Hornets pitchersÂ
David Frelin,Â
Rhys Wolford andÂ
Nick Sborz. After Frelin allowed the single run in the first, the three men combined to face the minimum 18 batters in the final six innings. Mount Aloysius got two hits and had another batter reach on a hit batsman during this span, but Shenandoah turned two double plays and threw another runner out at second attempting to steal.
JuniorÂ
Daniel Ziccardy finished the day 2-for-4 with three RBI while classmateÂ
David Jenkins had three hits in four plate appearances. Duckett, McCormick and seniorÂ
Adam Kuchemba all drove in two runs.
Wolford (2-2) got the win with three innings of relief. He allowed one hit and struck out two.
