Baseball Splits with Bishops

ROCKY MOUNT, N.C. - Shenandoah University used a stellar pitching performance from sophomore Taylor DuFrene to salvage a USA South Conference baseball split with host NC Wesleyan Saturday afternoon.

After league-leading Wesleyan (16-10, 9-5 USA South) took game one 7-3, DuFrene allowed just one run on six hits in seven innings of a 5-1 nightcap victory.

The victory also snaps the Hornets (17-8, 5-6) conference losing streak at five games. SU had lost the final game of the Averett series two weeks ago before being swept by Ferrum last week.

DuFrene (5-1) was staked to a 5-0 lead as the Hornets scored four runs in the first and one more in the second off of Bishops starter and loser Ben Moore (3-2). Shenandoah had five hits in that four-run second, including an RBI single by Adam Duckett and a two-run single from DH Sam Fullerton.

Fullerton, Duckett, David Jenkins and Adam Kuchemba all finished with two hits with Kuchemba, Duckett and Ryan Anderson each driving in a run.

DuFrene left after seven, giving way to freshman Hunter Calloway. Calloway struck out two and gave up three hits to help preserve the victory.

The Bishops jumped all over game one starter Matthew Davis (3-2) for three runs on two hits in their first at-bat - they added four more in the fourth off of reliever Jason Burgess to take a commanding 7-0 lead.

Jenkins was 3 for 5, Anderson 2 for 4 with an RBI and Duckett 2 for 2 and a run batted in to lead the offense.
