WINCHESTER, Va. – The Shenandoah University baseball team gave coach Kevin Anderson his 200th career college victory Saturday afternoon in the opening game of a USA South Conference doubleheader with Christopher Newport, but committed a late defensive lapse in the nightcap to allow CNU take the second game.

SU (7-2, 1-1 USA South) won game one 17-5 before Christopher Newport won game two 4-2. The first game was halted with two outs in the bottom of the eighth due to the NCAA mercy rule.

With the scored tied at 2-2 in the top of the ninth of the second game, CNU (4-5, 2-3) saw pinch hitter Michael Fawley and shortstop Trae Bailey both reach with singles to center. An ensuing pitch to Garrett Robinson from Hornets reliever David Frelin (0-2) got away from catcher Adam Kuchemba, but Kuchemba recovered the ball in time to have a play on either Fawley or Bailey.

Kuchemba elected to try and get Fawley as he attempted to retreat to second, but his throw sailed over the head of centerfielder Scott Disch , who was covering second base. With no one to back up the errant throw, both Fawley and Bailey scored to give the Captains the winning runs.

Game two starter Eben Brower (2-0) allowed a leadoff single to SU pinch hitter Drew Crawford, but retired the next three hitters in order to even the weekend series at a game apiece. Brower allowed two runs on seven hits and one walk. He struck out nine.

Game one was much kinder to the hosts as they rallied from a 4-3 deficit heading into the bottom of the fifth with three runs in the fifth, four in the sixth and five more in the seventh.

Disch started what proved to be the game-winning rally with a single to center and moved to second when David Jenkins singled to right center. Ryan Anderson plated Disch with a single through the right side before the Hornets scored a pair of unearned runs on a single error.

Catcher Steven Todd had a groundball to second that Rob Quinn bobbled at second – this allowed Jenkins to score from third. Anderson, who had advanced to second on his single when the Captains attempted to cut down Jenkins at third, never stopped running on the error and came all the around to score the hosts sixth run of the contest.

The offense was enough to make a winner of sophomore Hunter Calloway (2-0), who came on in relief of starter Jason Burgess in the top of the fifth. Calloway struck out four against two walks and three hits in 3 and 2/3 innings of action. He also gave up one unearned run.

SU chased CNU starter Kenny Moreland (2-2) with two outs in the sixth after he allowed four consecutive batters to reach base safely. Only four of the 10 runs that Moreland gave up were earned, but he was charged with loss after Shenandoah touched him for nine hits and one walk those 6.2 innings. He also struck out five.

The Hornets held a 2-0 lead in game two on two runs in the bottom of the second inning. Shenandoah combined two hits and a hit batsman to score these two runs – Matt McCormick drove in the first run with a single down the rightfield line before coach Kevin Anderson used a little strategy to score the second run. With two outs, Anderson sent McCormick on a steal to second, and as soon as the throw went through, Adam Kuchemba broke for home. Kuchemba had reached when he was hit by a pitch and moved to third on McCormick's single. CNU scored its initial game two run in the fifth and tied it in the sixth.

McCormick finished the double dip with seven hits in eight at-bats and had two doubles, a home run and two RBI. Jenkins was 4 for 6 in the opener with four runs scored while Ryan Anderson had three hits and five RBI in the rout.

John Corbin was 3 for 4 with two RBI in game one for the Captains with Garrett Robinson, Rob Quinn and Mark Genovese all getting two hits in the nightcap.
