WINCHESTER, Va. – Shenandoah University earned its first women's lacrosse victory of the 2006 season Saturday afternoon with a 7-6 non-league win over Wesley College.
Shenandoah (1-2) broke open a 4-4 halftime contest with the first three goals of the second. Staked to a 7-4 lead following a
Kelly Matagiesegoal off of an
Erika Bradd assist at the 15:22 mark, the Hornets held on as Wesley (0-1) scored the game's final two goals.
The Wolverines made it interesting in the final minute as Stacey Johnson tallied her third goal to cut the visitors deficit to one at 7-6, but SU won the ensuing draw control to ice the win.
Lauren Prentice was awarded possession on that draw due to a Wesley foul and the Hornets ran out the clock from behind the Wolverines goal.
Junior
Joia Davis, playing in her first game since rejoining the team at the end of her basketball season, led the Hornets with three goals while Matagiese had two and Bradd one. Bradd joined Davis at the top of the scoring list with two assists for three total points.
Johnson had three goals and Shannon Marino two for Wesley.
Shenandoah outshot its visitors 37-26, grabbed 32 of the game's 57 groundballs and won 16 of the 20 draw controls.
Wolverines goalie Sarah DiSimone had 11 of her 17 saves in the first half. Her counterpart, the Hornets'
Wendy Taylor, had 11 saves. She also did not allow a goal on any of Wesley's nine free position shots.
