WINCHESTER, Va. – Shenandoah University staged a big comeback in game one before running into a hot pitcher in the Hornets USA South Conference baseball doubleheader with visiting Greensboro College Saturday afternoon.
Shenandoah (20-10, 6-8 USA South) took game one 13-12 before the Pride (20-10, 10-7) rode an excellent pitching performance to a 5-0 victory in the nightcap.
Pride sophomore Kit Mock (5-1) scattered just five hits to earn the complete game shutout. After allowing an infield single and a walk in the third inning (to
David Jenkins and
Daniel Ziccardy, respectively), Mock retired 15 Hornets in a row until Jenkins led off the ninth with a single up the middle.
Mock struck out five and walked just one to allow GC to salvage the split. Sophomore
Taylor DuFrene took the loss for the hosts after allowing three runs on five hits and five walks in seven innings.
Nine outs into the opener, it appeared that Greensboro was on its way to an easy win. The Pride chased SU starter
Drew Dobbins with a seven-run second inning - they had just three hits but took advantage of two walks and an error.
However, the hosts answered GC's seven runs with two of its own in the bottom the frame, scored four in the third and took the lead with a three-run fourth. The Hornets got to Greensboro's AnDrew Keever for eight runs (seven earned) on six hits in three-plus innings. He was pulled in favor lefty Torrey Poholsky three batters into the fourth.
Keever, entered the game with a 4-1 record, was let off the hook when the Pride tied it with two runs in the sixth before eventually taking a 10-9 lead with one in the seventh. Shenandoah retook the lead with two in its half of the inning, but did not score the game-winning run until putting together a two-out rally in the eighth.
After Brandon Jorth (1-3) retired
Adam Duckett and
Matt McCormick to start the inning,
Daniel Bowers singled to center. One batter later, Bowers raced all the way home as
Scott Disch hit a sinking liner that got past a diving Josh Austin in left for a double.
Senior
Nick Sborz allowed a two-out hit in the ninth, but quickly induced a groundball to Ziccardy at second to end the threat. Sborz recorded the final six outs of the contest to improve to 2-0 this spring.
Jenkins had a combined three hits in the two games while Bowers and Disch both had two hits in the opener.
Jeff Gregory and Jess Maloney had four hits for GC with Pat Burgess driving in four runs.
