WINCHESTER, Va. - Shenandoah University used a quick start Saturday afternoon to propel itself to a 21-5 USA South Conference women's lacrosse victory over visiting NC Wesleyan.
Shenandoah (5-7, 2-3 USA South) scored four goals in the first 4:35 of Saturday's contest to dispatch the Lady Bishops (2-11, 1-4). The win also keeps the Hornets USA South Conference Tournament hopes alive while it eliminates NC Wesleyan from tournament contention.
With a win next week at Methodist, SU will create a three-way tie for third place in the league. The top four teams in the league then move on to the tournament April 14-15 in Burlington, N.C. for the right to represent the league in the NCAA Tournament for the first time ever.
It took just 27 seconds for the Hornets to get on the board Saturday asÂ
Joia Davis converted off of anÂ
Erika Bradd feed. Bradd scored 28 seconds later beforeÂ
Jenn Iuliano andÂ
Kelly Matagiese made it 4-0 with goals at 25:53 and 25:25.
Buffy Casto finally snapped this string for first-year NCWC with the first of her four goals at 22:44, but the Hornets reeled off seven more tallies to take an 11-4 lead into the break.
Bradd opened the second half scoring at 28:39, and when she scored again just under 10 minutes later, she became the second woman in as many games to reach the 100 career goal mark. Bradd joins Davis, Matagiese and Deanna Estes '98 on that list with Estes' 151 goals leading Matagiese by 24 for tops all-time.
Matagiese and Iuliano led all scorers with five goals each while Davis added four with three assists. Casto had four and Sarah Smith one for the Lady Bishops.
