WINCHESTER, Va. - Shenandoah University completed its 2006 women's lacrosse season Wednesday afternoon with a 24-3 non-league victory over Hood College.

Shenandoah (6-8) scored just 17 seconds into the game, led 15-0 at the half and 22-0 before Hood (3-8) scored with 3:55 remaining in the contest.

The Hornets outshot the Blazers 47-7, including 28-3 in the first half. Hood's three goals did come consecutively as Laura Pitts figured in all three tallies.

Pitts broke the scoreless draught with an unassisted goal at 3:55, won the ensuing draw and assisted Liz Rakowski 55 seconds at 3:00. She again won the draw and this time fed Annie Lavery at 1:56 to bring the score to 22-3 Shenandoah.

This would be as close as they would come as SU got a Kelly Matagiesegoal at 34 seconds and a Jenn Iuliano tally 17 seconds later to put a cap on the scoring.

Seven different Hornets scored, including Matagiese and Erika Braddwith five goals each, Iuliano and Lauren Prentice four, Joia Davis three, Arissa Malick two and Lauren Carpinello one. Matagiese reached the double-digit mark in scoring with a school record-tying five assists.

Matagiese will enter her senior year needing just three points to pass Deanna Estes '98 for the all-time lead at SU. She also needs one assist to match Davis' all-time total of 45 and 19 goals to reach Estes' mark of 151.

Shenandoah won the groundball battle 38-17, largely behind Bradd's eight and seven from Carpinello. Carpinello will enter her final season needing 25 groundballs to catch Heather Lethbridge '05.
