BURLINGTON, N.C. – Greensboro College eliminated the Shenandoah University baseball team from the 2006 USA South Conference baseball tournament Thursday night with an 8-2 victory over the Hornets in the final game of the day.
However, Shenandoah (24-15) is not finished with its season. SU will get a chance to add to the most successful season under fourth-year coach
Kevin Anderson with non-league games against Bridgewater, Johns Hopkins and Columbia Union this coming week.
Greensboro (24-14) continues on through the elimination bracket with a 3:30 game against Christopher Newport Friday. The winner of that contest takes on the loser of the Methodist/NC Wesleyan game for the right to play for the conference championship.
The Pride got to SU starter
Matthew Davis (5-3) early, touching him for five runs on seven hits in two-plus innings. After GC had its first three hitters reach base safely in the third, Anderson brought in
Jason Burgessto relieve Davis.
Shenandoah scored its runs with one in the sixth and another in the eighth off of Greensboro starter AnDrew Keever. Keever (6-1) gained a measure of revenge for his rocky outing against SU in Winchester two weeks ago by scattering six hits and six walks in the complete game victory. In that April 1 contest, Keever was staked to a 7-0 lead but allowed eight runs on six hits before being pulled two batters into the fourth inning of an eventual 13-12 loss.
Ryan Anderson, who had two RBI in Thursday morning's loss to NC Wesleyan, plated the Hornets final run of the tournament with a double to left center that scored
Daniel Ziccardy. Ziccardy singled through the right side to lead off the eighth.
