WINCHESTER, Va. - Shenandoah University defeated its highest ranked opponent of the 2006 season Wednesday night with a 8-7 non-league win over No. 12 Johns Hopkins University.
SeniorÂ
Adam Kuchemba singled home classmateÂ
Scott Disch with two outs in the bottom of the 11th inning to give the Hornets (25-16) the win. The victory is also the first in three lifetime meetings for SU against the Blue Jays (23-5-2).
The game was close throughout, as neither team led by more than two runs at any one time. Shenandoah did have a two-run margin after breaking a 4-4 tie with two runs in the fifth, but JHU one run in the sixth, seventh and eighth to send the game into extra innings.
In the bottom of the 11th, Disch beat out a one-out tapper in front of the mound and advanced to second when losing pitcher Paul Martone's throw bounded into foul territory beyond first base. AfterÂ
David Jenkins lined to center andÂ
Ryan Anderson was intentionally walked, Kuchemba lined the Martone (0-1) offering into centerfield for the game-winning hit.
Kuchemba's single also made a winner of seniorÂ
Nick Sborz (3-0), who allowed the Jays to tie it in the eighth. Sborz pitched the final four innings with two strikeouts to earn the victory.
Kuchemba finished the evening 4-for-6 with three RBI - he also drove in runs in the first and fifth innings. Disch and Anderson both had two hits and two runs scored.
