Hornets Squeeze Past Pride

WINCHESTER. Va. E Shenandoah University claimed its third USA South Conference baseball series of the 2006 season with an 8-3 victory over Greensboro College Sunday afternoon at Bridgeforth Field.

Eight of the nine Hornets (21-10, 7-8 USA South) had at least one hit, but it was the one that didnít that drove in the game-winning run. With the scored tied at 3-3 in the bottom of the sixth, sophomore Drew Crawfordexecuted a perfect suicide squeeze to score Adam Kessell from third base and give the hosts the lead for good. It was the first of two successful squeezes that SU completed on the afternoon.

Shenandoah needed the late game heroics after the Pride (20-11, 10-8) erased an early 2-0 deficit with two runs in the fourth and another in the fifth. GC scored its first two runs when junior Jess Maloney hit a two-run shot in the fourth before taking the lead on an unearned run one inning later.

With a runner on third and one out after catcher Adam Kuchemba threw his second runner out attempting to steal second, Jeff Gregory hit a groundball to Crawford at third base that caught Buddy Allen off the bag. Crawford threw home in an attempt to cut down Allen, but Allen was able to score when Allen retreated to third and Kuchemba over threw shortstop David Jenkins at third.

However, the Hornets made all of that moot in the bottom of the sixth as they chased GC starter Chatham Bray (4-3) with four runs on five hits and one Greensboro error. SU sent 10 men to the plate in the frame and scored its first run when Bray uncorked a wild pitch with Scott Lamberton third base.

Daniel Ziccardy and Lambert led Shenandoah hit parade with three hits apiece while Adam Duckett drove in a pair of runs with a first inning double to right center.

Sophomore David Frelin (1-2) earned the win with an inning and 2/3 of scoreless relief. He came on with one out in the sixth and the bases loaded to induce an inning-ending 463 double play.
