WINCHESTER, Va. - The Shenandoah University baseball team matched its win 2005 win total and completed a season sweep with a 5-3 non-league victory over Catholic University Thursday night.
Shenandoah (23-10), which defeated the Cardinals 15-10 on March 16, needed a rally to dispatch CUA this time.
Catholic (15-15-1) led 3-1 after scoring two runs in the sixth off of Hornets starter
Taylor DuFrene, but saw its defense desert them one inning later.
The Hornets took the lead for good with four runs in the bottom of the seventh - SU had three hits but also benefited from four Cardinals errors. The tying run scored when CUA second baseman Matthew Rosner made two errors on one play.
With two outs and runners on second and third,
Daniel Ziccardy singled up the middle to score
Daniel Bowers.
David Jenkins came around to score when Rosner bobbled the ball in short center, and then Ziccardy moved to third when Rosner's throw to the plate sailed past catcher Robert Soler.
Two pitches later, Ziccardy trotted home on relief pitcher Peter Doyle's balk. The defensive collapse made a loser of Jordan Clark (3-5), who allowed four runs on seven hits in 6.2 innings.
Freshman
Hunter Calloway, who came on with a runner on first and two outs in the seventh, got the win with four outs of scoreless relief. Calloway (2-1) turned it over to closer
Nick Sborz for the ninth. Sborz became the all-time saves leader at SU with his fourth save of the spring and the 12th of his career. He induced two groundouts before striking out Rosner to end it.
Adam Kuchemba,
Adam Duckett and
Matt McCormick all had two hits for the Hornets while Rosner and Kevin Conley did the same for Catholic.
