WINCHESTER, Va. - The Shenandoah University women's basketball team earned its first-ever home regular season victory over USA South opponent Christopher Newport University by downing the Lady Captains 66-64 Wednesday night.

Shenandoah (8-3, 1-0) snapped a 14-year losing streak to the Lady Captains (6-6, 0-1) with the two-point victory. SU owns five other victories over CNU, including one in Shingleton in the 1996 Dixie Tournament championship, but Wednesday's win was the first at home during the conference schedule.

The Hornets earned the victory by scoring the final five points of the contest. Trailing 64-61 after Nikki Rowland hit a pair of free throws with 2:08 left, Alicia Sanders tied it with a three pointer four seconds later.

After Samantha Davis turned it over with 1:41 remaining, sophomore Stephanie Harrold gave the hosts the lead for good by sandwiching two free throws around a CNU time-out.

The Lady Captains then missed two more shots from the field, including a jumper with six ticks showing, before freshman Katherine Flint closed out the scoring by making one of two from the line at the three second mark.

The final pushed capped a half in which SU erased a six-point halftime deficit by shooting 13 of 29 (44.8 percent) from the field. Shenandoah needed this proficiency as Christopher Newport grabbed 51 of the game's 86 rebounds.

Sanders led the Hornets with 19 points with Flint adding 10 and classmate Alexis Hargbol 11.

Nikki Rowland had 20 points and 10 boards for the Lady Captains.
