FAYETTEVILLE, N.C. – In a game in which one player from each team achieved a significant career milestone, host Methodist outlasted Shenandoah University 81-66 in a USA South Conference women's basketball game Sunday afternoon.
Methodist (10-7, 4-3 USA South) bounced back from a Saturday double-overtime loss to Christopher Newport University with the win while the defeat is a season-long third straight for SU (11-6, 4-3).
On the individual side, senior
Cassie Womack achieved a Shenandoah University basketball first with her eighth rebound of Sunday's contest. Womack, who finished with 14 boards, is now the only Hornets player to have pulled down at least 1000 career rebounds. She achieved the school first at the 32 second mark of the first half.
This groundbreaking milestone matched the Lady Monarchs' Stacy Williams, who scored her 1000th career point just over three minutes into the game. Those two marks capped a first half in which the two teams traded the lead six times and were tied on two others. MU took a 38-36 lead into the break after Shenandoah called time-out following Womack's board to set up a final shot only to turn it over with five seconds remaining.
The Lady Monarchs then rushed to the other end of the floor, but a 15-foot attempt by Michaela Myers went off the front rim as the buzzer sounded.
The lead traded teams four more times in the second half, the last when Ashley Smith hit a jumper with 12:57 left to give the hosts a 49-48 lead.
The Hornets were able to tie it one more time and cut the deficit to a single point on two more occasions, but Methodist pulled away with a 10-2 run from the 8:31 to 4:56 marks. SU never was able to get closer than nine points for the remainder of the contest.
Senior
Alicia Sanders led the visitors with 23 points with Womack's 14 points giving her a double-double. Williams had a game-high 25 for the victors.
Box Score
The Hornets conclude this three-game road trip on Wednesday at Christopher Newport. Tip-off is scheduled for 5:30.
