STEVENSON, Md. - Senior
Cassie Womack broke one of the oldest records in the Shenandoah University women's basketball record book, but it came in a losing effort as Albright defeated the Hornets 67-57 in the first round of the Villa Julie College Tournament Saturday afternoon.
Shenandoah (7-2) will take on the host Lady Mustangs tomorrow at noon in the tournament consolation. Juniata defeated VJC 55-45 in Saturday's second game.
Albright (7-4) protected a 33-31 halftime lead by forcing 11 of 23 SU turnovers in the final 20 minutes of play. The Hornets shot 36.8 percent (21 for 57) from the field, but were just 9 of 32 (28.1 percent) after the break. In addition to the 23 turnovers, the Hornets also missed seven of 18 opportunities from the free throw line.
In addition to senior
Alicia Sanders scoring 16 points, the bright spot for coach
Michelle Guyant-Holloway had to be Womack passing Laura Johnson '85 for the all-time rebounding lead. Needing three boards to pass Johnson's 896 career total, Womack got it on a defensive rebound at the 15:27 mark of the first.
She finished with 10 rebounds on the day, and if she continues at her current pace of 11.1 per game, she will crack the 1000 rebound barrier in the Christopher Newport game on January 31. Womack would be the first Shenandoah player, regardless of gender, to reach this mark.
Freshman
Alexis Hargbol rounded out the Hornets double-digit scorers with 11 points.
