FREDERICKSBURG, Va. - No. 8 University of Mary Washington used a strong run midway through the first half Monday night to key an 80-69 non-conference women's basketball victory over visiting Shenandoah.
Trailing 12-11 following aÂ
Cassie Womack stickback at the 14:19 mark for SU (2-1), the Eagles (3-1) preceded to reel off the game's next 16 points to take a 27-12 lead with 9:23 remaining.
FreshmanÂ
Alexis Hargbol finally snapped the scoreless string with a layup 23 seconds later, but the damage was done.
UMW led by at least eight points the rest of the way and carried a 43-34 lead into the halftime lockerroom. The Eagles shot 17 for 35 in the first 20 minutes, but saw Shenandoah stay in it by making four of six attempts from behind the three-point arc.
Mary Washington opened up a 19-point advantage by the 13:54 mark of the second, but SU hung in and eventually cut the deficit to just six, 72-64, with 2:35 left.
Unfortunately for the Hornets, the Eagles converted a three-point play on the next trip down the floor and SU would get no closer than seven points the rest of the way.
Hargbol led the visitors with 20 points whileÂ
Alicia Sanders and sophomoreÂ
Whitney French each had 12. Womack added a game-high 13 boards.
Debbie Bruen had 21 and Liz Hickey 17 with 11 rebounds for the victors.
