FERRUM, Va. - USA South Conference co-leader Ferrum College halted Shenandoah University's women's basketball winning streak at two games Saturday afternoon with a 60-52 victory at Swartz Gymnasium.
The Lady Panthers (16-6, 9-2 USA South) kept pace in the league with Greensboro by downing the visiting Hornets (13-8, 6-5). GC blew out NC Wesleyan 108-54 at home Saturday afternoon.
FC was able to earn its seventh straight victory over Shenandoah by holding SU to a USA South Conference low 52 points on 16 of 58 shooting (27.6 percent) from the field.
The Hornets had come into the game scoring an average of 75.8 points per conference contest and had totaled 173 points in last weekend's wins over NC Wesleyan and Peace.
After Ferrum took a 29-27 lead into the halftime lockerroom, they pulled away in the final 20 minutes by turning up the defensive pressure. In addition to holding Shenandoah to just seven second-half field goals, the Lady Panthers also kept the league's second leading scorer,Â
Alicia Sanders, in check by allowing her just five points.
Shenandoah freshmanÂ
Alexis Hargbol had six of her team-high 13 after the break, but an 18-8 Ferrum run to start the second half proved too much to overcome.
Hargbol had a team-high eight rebounds to go with her 13 points while Sanders chipped in 11 total points.
Tonya Wright had 20 points and Quanita Bennett 12 for the hosts.
