ARLINGTON, Va. - Shenandoah University opened its 2007 women's lacrosse season with a 10-8 non-league victory over Marymount University Wednesday night.

Shenandoah (1-0) earns a measure of revenge with the victory over the Saints (0-1). Marymount had downed the Hornets in Winchester in the 2006 season opener.

SU scored the first two goals of the Wednesday's game, getting an unassisted Courtney Beard tally at 22:27 and a Lauren Carpinello to Kelly Matagiese goal 27 seconds later.

After the Saints rallied to tie the game at 2-2 on a pair of free position goals, Shenandoah reeled off four straight to take the lead for good.

Marymount finally stopped this string with a goal at 11:01, but SU junior Arissa Malick converted a free position shot with 9:51 to play to bring the margin back to four goals.

The two teams then traded the game's next five tallies before the hosts were able to put a two-goal-run together midway through the second to cut the deficit to 9-7 with 12:53 remaining.

Fortunately for the Hornets, Malick closed out Shenandoah's scoring at 10:36 with an unassisted goal and the team coasted home to the victory.

Matagiese led the victors with three goals while Carpinello, Malick and freshman Jen Franco had two goals apiece. Carpinello matched Matagiese on the scoring sheet by contributing that first half assist.

Goalkeeper Wendy Taylor made four saves to earn the victory. SU also won the groundball battle 35-28 and won 12 of the game's 19 draw controls.

Matagiese' final point, an unassisted goal just over five minutes into the second half, tied her with former SU All-American Deanna Estes '98 for the all-time scoring lead at SU. Matagiese will get a chance to break the school record of 179 points on Saturday at Wesley College.

She is also now 16 goals from tying Estes' career mark of 151 goals.
