Ferrum Prevents Baseball Sweep

FERRUM, Va. - Shenandoah University jumped out to a big lead early in its USA South Conference baseball contest at Ferrum Monday afternoon, but could not hold it in a 14-7 FC victory.

SU (8-6, 2-4 USA South) led 6-2 after scoring six runs in the second, but the Panthers (12-9, 5-3) tied it with four of their own in the bottom of the frame.

Ferrum added another in the bottom of the fourth before putting the contest out of reach with a four-run sixth.

Shenandoah's final run came in the eighth when designated hitter Adam Kessel doubled in pinch hitter Drew Crawford. Crawford had led off the frame with a single to left.

SU had six hits in the second off of FC starter Casey Davenport, including a two-run home run by senior catcher Steven Todd and a Ryan Anderson two-run double.

Junior David Frelin, who took over for starter Rhys Wolford in the middle of the second, took the loss after giving up five runs (three earned) on five hits in 4.0 innings. He struck out three.

Kessel led the Hornets offense with 3-for-4 day while senior Daniel Ziccardy was 2-for-5.

Shenandoah is off for the next two days and does not play again until hosting Dickinson on Thursday at 3:00 in a non-league game. Tomorrow's game at Johns Hopkins and Wednesday's game at McDaniel are both postponed due to the weather.
