Baseball Splits with PSU-Altoona

WINCHESTER, Va. – Shenandoah University prepared for its opening conference weekend of the 2007 baseball season by splitting a non-league doubleheader with Penn State – Altoona.

SU (4-1) came back to win game two, 13-3, after falling 7-5 in the opener.

Senior Ryan Anderson led the Hornets in that game two victory with a 4-for-4 contest that included two doubles, a triple and three runs batted in. Anderson drove in a run in each of his first three at-bats.

The squad's 13 hits were more than enough support for freshman Scott Van Dusseldorp, who won his first collegiate start by allowing just three unearned runs in 5.1 innings.

After Van Dusseldorp tired in the middle of the sixth, SU coach Kevin Anderson turned to senior Daniel Bowers and junior Nathan Fewell to record in the final five outs. Bowers worked out of a bases loaded, one out jam by inducing a pair of groundouts and then got the first out of the seventh before handing the reins to Fewell.

Fewell finished off the Lions (1-1) with a 4-6-3 double play and Shenandoah walked off with the split.

In addition to Ryan Anderson's four hits, Drew CrawfordDrue Vernonand Adam Kessel all had two with both Vernon and Kessel also contributing three RBI.

The Hornets had 11 hits in game one, but fell victim to some timely PSU-A hitting.

The Lions controlled the entire opener for the most part, scoring two runs in the first and two more in the second to take a commanding 4-0 lead. Shenandoah managed two tie it with two in the second and two more in the third, but Altoona retook the lead with a single run in the top of the fifth.

SU once again tied it in the bottom of the frame as Anderson drilled a line drive home run over the left field wall. Unfortunately for the hosts, the home run also represented a run squandered. Shortstop David Jenkins led off the Hornets fifth with a double to right center, but was caught in a run-down trying to stretch the hit to three-bases.

PSU-A scored what proved to be the game-winning runs on two hits in the top of the seventh. Designated hitter Matt Yankowitz led off the frame with a single to center and moved to second when Ben Matthews drew a one-out walk.

Pinch hitter Mike Pesarchick loaded the bases with another a walk, and reliever David Frelin allowed a Chad Snook two-run single just inside the right-field line to give the visitors the two-run cushion.

Shenandoah placed its first two hitters on base in its last at-bat, but Paul Keith struck out Jenkins and got Ryan Anderson to hit into a game-ending 6-4-3 double play to earn the save.

Kessel, Daniel Ziccardy and Van Dusseldorp, who played first base in the opener, all had two hits with Van Dusseldorp driving in three runs on a pair of doubles.
