FREDERICK, Md. - Shenandoah University snapped its four-game women's lacrosse losing streak with a 15-12 non-league victory at Hood College Friday afternoon.
The Hornets (2-4) won for the first time since the season opener at Marymount with the three-goal win over the Blazers (0-3).
Shenandoah got the winning margin by scoring six of the nine goals in the first half. Hood opened the game by tallying three straight, but SU went on a 7-0 run that sandwiched the halftime to take a lead it would not relinquish.
SeniorsÂ
Lauren Carpinello andÂ
Kelly Matagiese keyed this run as Matagiese had a goal and four assists and Carpinello two goals and one assist.
Matagiese' first assist, on a Carpinello goal at 11:04 that opened the team's scoring, made her the school's all-time assist leader. The four assists is also the second-best performance in school history.
The two seniors both finished the day with seven points - Carpinello had four goals and three assists and Matagiese three and four.
In all, seven different women scored at least one point withÂ
Jen Franco,Â
Arissa Malick andÂ
Sara Humphreys all scoring two goals.
The Blazers, who took 33 shots to the Hornets 34, got as close as three goals on three different occasions. The last came when Lauren Perzan closed out the game's scoring with an unassisted goal with 1:52 remaining.
Fortunately for SU, goalkeeperÂ
Wendy Taylor made 16 saves to preserve the victory.
