WINCHESTER, Va. – No. 11 Washington & Lee University used a balanced performance on both ends of the field Wednesday afternoon to down host Shenandoah 18-1 in non-conference women's lacrosse action.
W&L;, 7-2 and ranked No. 11 in the latest IWLCA poll, scored nine goals in each half to cruise past the Hornets (3-6).
Shenandoah scored its lone goal at the 8:03 mark the second half. Senior Lauren Carpinello was fouled just outside the 18-yard box and on the ensuing restart, fed freshman Jen Franco.
Franco caught the ball five feet from the cage and deposited the ball into an open net. The Lady Generals goal was because keeper Eliza Van Beuren, the third W&L; goalie of the game, was out of the goal when the foul was called.
Avery Lovejoy got things started for Washington & Lee with an unassisted goal at 26:53, which also started a four-goals-in-six-minutes run for the Lady Generals. Four different women tallied during this spurt and the final three goals were assisted.
W&L; finished the half by scoring an additional five goals, including two in the final 41 seconds.
The second half brought more of the same – Washington & Lee scored five times in a 5:19 span early in the half and controlled possession throughout.
Eleven different women scored for the Lady Generals, including seven that scored at least three points. Colleen Evans, Britten Mathrews and Lovejoy all had four points on three goals and one assist with Kelsi Robinson getting her four points on one goal and three assists.
Shenandoah goalie Wendy Taylor had an excellent game with 16 saves, but was peppered with 43 shots. W&L; also held a 19-16 advantage in groundballs and won 16 of 21 draw controls.
