NEWPORT NEWS, Va. - Christopher Newport University put the finishing touches on a USA South Conference baseball sweep with a 9-5 victory over visiting Shenandoah University Sunday afternoon.
Shenandoah (4-3, 0-2 USA South) jumped out to a 5-1 lead with one run in the first, two in the second and two more in the third, but CNU (10-3, 3-1) got back into it with a four-run third.
After scoring those four runs on three hits and one Hornets error, Christopher Newport chased SU starterÂ
Taylor DuFrene (1-1) with another three runs in the fifth.
DuFrene got the first out of the fifth, but the next three of the next four batters reached safely to put the hosts in control. The big blow came with two outs and runners on the corners - Eric Cole doubled down the left field line to score both runners and the Captains had a lead they would not relinquish.
DuFrene was charged with the loss after allowing eight runs (three earned) on five hits and four walks in 4.2 innings. He struck out two before giving way to seniorÂ
Jason Burgess six batters into the fifth.
SeniorÂ
Steven Todd and juniorÂ
Adam Kessel both had two hits for the Hornets with each driving in a run. Kessel also had a double.

Shenandoah is at home five times this week beginning on Tuesday with a non-league game against Gettysburg. SU will also host Lynchburg on Wednesday, Guilford Thursday and Averett over the weekend.
