WINCHESTER, Va. - Senior Kelly Matagiese scored a career-high 11 points Tuesday afternoon to lead fourth-seeded Shenandoah University to an 18-2 USA South Conference Women's Lacrosse Tournament victory over No. 5 Averett.

Shenandoah (5-9) now moves onto Saturday's semi-finals at the Spring Sports Festival in Burlington, N.C. against top-seeded Christopher Newport University. The Hornets have beat the Lady Captains in the semi-finals of both the 2004 and 2005 tournaments.

SU needed just 30 seconds to get its first goal against Averett (3-8) and led 12-1 by halftime of Tuesday's game.

The Lady Cougars quickly answered that Jen Franco goal with a Vanessa Jordan tally at 28:21, but Shenandoah pulled away by scoring the game's next 12 goals. Matagiese had half of this total, including a five-of-six stretch from 26:38 to 12:13 of the first.

Matagiese, the all-time leading scorer in school history, finished the first half with five goals and two assists before adding three goals and one assist in the second. Her 11 points misses the school record by one.

Deanna Estes '98 set that mark with 12 goals against Hollins on April 13, 1998.

In addition to Matagiese' 12 points, junior Arissa Malick had four goals and four assists and freshman Jen Franco two goals and one assist.

Senior Lauren Carpinello matched Franco's output while grabbing eight draw controls, causing eight turnovers and scooping up eight groundballs. All were game-highs.

In addition to Jordan's goal, Darcie Jones and Stacy Rinaldi scored for AU.

Shenandoah held a 30-19 advantage in groundballs and won 18 of 22 draw controls.
