BURLINGTON, N.C. - Shenandoah University fell to seventh-seeded Greensboro College 10-4 Thursday morning in the opening game of the USA South Conference baseball tournament.

The loss puts Shenandoah (20-11) into a noon game Friday against the loser of the Averett/NC Wesleyan contest. Those two teams play Thursday at 2:15.

Greensboro (20-15) plays again Thursday - they take on top-seeded Methodist in the last game of the evening. The contest was originally scheduled for 8:00 p.m., but the tournament is currently running 90 minutes late.

Freshman Scott Van Dusseldorp gave the Hornets the early lead with a solo home run in the bottom of the second.

One inning later, GC answered with a Jess Maloney two-out, two-run homer.

SU starting pitcher Taylor DuFrene (3-3) left after four with an injury. Freshman Daniel Eadie came on in the fifth and gave up two runs on one hit in that frame.

Shenandoah put two runners on in the bottom of the fifth, but sophomore Scott Lambert popped to third to end scoring chance.

The Pride posted a three-spot in the sixth with Maloney driving in the last run on a single into the rightfield gap.

David Jenkins led off the SU sixth with a double off the leftfield, moved to third on a flyout and scored on an Kessel groundball that went for an error on Maloney.

In the seventh, the Hornets chased GC starter Chatham Bray (8-4) with two doubles and a bunt single. Preston Tarleton led off with a double to right center, moved to third when Daniel Ziccardy laid a perfect bunt down the third-base line and scored on another Jenkins double to center.

Kevin Showe came on for Bray and got out of the jam by inducing a flyout and a groundout.

Greensboro put the game out of reach with a three-run eighth.
