Baseball Drops Extra Inning Contest

FROSTBURG, Md. - Host Frostburg State University got a game-winning single in the bottom of the 11th inning Thursday afternoon to down visiting Shenandoah 6-5 in a non-league baseball game.

The Bobcats (17-11) loaded the bases in both the ninth and 10th against SU (22-14) before seeing its first two hitters reach base safely in the 11th.

Brett Mitchell led off against Hornets reliever Daniel Bowers (1-2) with a double to left and advanced to third on a Bryan Burke single to left. With Mitchell down just 90 feet from scoring the winning run, Mike Gitzen singled down the left-field line to end the contest.

FSU had loaded the bases with one out in its previous two at-bats only to see Shenandoah get out of it with a 2-3 double play in the ninth and Bowers inducing a groundout and a flyout in the 10th.

Shenandoah scored its initial run of the game in the first and took a 2-1 lead after three, but had to rally in the eighth.

The Bobcats had taken a 4-3 lead with two runs in fifth and another in the sixth, but Adam Kessel tied it for the visitors by leading off the eighth with a solo home run to right.

Freshman Nick Gregg followed with a one-out double down the left-field line, and after Josh Campbell came into run for Gregg, Jason Eberz gave the Hornets the one-run lead with a RBI double to left.

Bowers allowed one run on three hits in 1.2 innings of relief. David Frelinstarted and gave up five runs (four earned) on 10 hits in 7.1 innings. He struck out six.

Joe Garrity got the win with 3.2 innings of scoreless relief. He allowed three hits.

Kessel, Gregg and Eberz all had two hits for coach Kevin Anderson.

Shenandoah travels to Waynesburg on Monday for a non-league game.
