WINCHESTER, Va. - Shenandoah University rallied late in game two Sunday afternoon to salvage a split of its non-league baseball doubleheader against visiting King's (Pa.) College.
Shenandoah (3-1) was a 4-2 winner in the nightcap after the Monarchs (1-1) won game one 8-7.
Trailing 2-0 heading into the bottom of the sixth inning of game two, SU chased King's starter Eric Matula (0-1) with four straight hits to start the frame.
Senior
Scott Lambert had the big hit in this run - his two-run double to deep center tied the game at two.
Lambert then moved to third when
Jesse Henry beat out a sacrifice bunt attempt for a hit, and eventually scored the game-winning run when pinch hitter
Jon Holcomb laced a two-out double into the gap in right center.
Holcomb's shot ended Matula's day - he allowed four runs on eight hits in 5 2/3 innings.
The hit also gave freshman
Bryce Sears (1-0) the victory in his first collegiate start. Sears gave up two runs on eight hits and one walk in six innings of work.
Senior
Gage Levac then came on for the seventh and posted his second save in as many outings. Levac allowed one hit and struck out two.
Game one was a wild affair in which the two teams combined for 20 hits and 15 runs off of eight different pitchers in the 8-7 King's victory.
The Monarchs got the winning run in the top of the seventh when Matt Unger drew a leadoff walk, moved to second on a passed ball and third on a groundout. After a strikeout, Patrick Harsch drove home Unger with a single through the left side off of SU senior
Matthew Davis (0-1).
The Hornets loaded the bases in the bottom of the frame with two out, but King's escaped when third baseman Jon Venarchick snared a line drive by
Kevin Brashears to end the contest.
KC senior Ryan Derry (1-0) earned the win in relief; he allowed no runs on two hits and four walks in 3.2 innings of work.
Four SU players: Brashears, Lambert,
Greg Van Sickler and
Brett Donahue, had two hits each with Brashears driving in two on a pair of doubles. Lambert also had two hits in the nightcap.
