WINCHESTER, Va. - Shenandoah University earned its sixth straight baseball victory Sunday afternoon with a 4-3, 10 inning USA South Conference win over Averett University.
The Hornets (22-4, 3-3 USA South) overcame a 60-minute rain delay and four errors to dispatch the Cougars (11-18-1, 2-4).
Junior
Jon Holcomb won the contest for the hosts with a two-out single to right to score pinch runner
Brandon Ewing from third.
Ewing found himself in position to score the game-winning run when
Greg Van Sickler doubled down the left-field line to start the frame and moved to third when
Scott Van Dusseldorp flied out to right.
After a pair of intentional walks, Averett reliever Justin Crowl induced a fielder's choice by pinch hitter
Brett Donahue to retire Van Sickler at home.
Holcomb then stepped to the plate and knocked a 2-2 pitch down the right field line for the game-winning hit.
Leading 2-0 in the fifth, Shenandoah was forced to wait out to rain delays totalling 60 minutes in order to continue the contest.
Coming out of the break, AU nearly made the Hornets regret the break in the weather.
The Cougars scored three unearned runs in the fourth as SU misplayed three Averett sacrifice bunt attempts to take a 3-2 lead heading into the bottom of the frame.
With the rain returning, Shenandoah placed its two of its first three batters on base, but could not push across the tying run.
Fortunately for the Hornets, the heavy rain shown on the radar held off and the game was able to continue.
After failing on a suicide squeeze in the sixth, SU tied the game in the eighth when Van Sickler was hit by pitch to lead off, was sacrificed to second and came home on
Jasen Eberz double to left.
Senior
Gage Levac (1-2) earned the win by getting the final two Cougars hitters. Levac came on for classmate Matt Davis, who allowed just one hit and struck out four in 5.0 innings of relief work.
Jon Walker (0-5) took the loss. He allowed one run on one hit in 1.1 innings of action.
