ST. MARY'S CITY, Md. – Host St. Mary's (Md.) spoiled the
debut of new SU Tennis Coach Larry
Hubbard by sweeping a men's/women's non-league doubleheader
Saturday afternoon.
The SMC men (1-0) took a 7-2 victory while the Seahawk women
(1-1) were 6-3 victors.
The matches were the fall opener for both the Shenandoah men and
women.
Freshman Carla Wong was the
lone double winner for the Hornets – she teamed with Briana Malley to win
8-6 in the top women's doubles match and then was a 6-0, 6-1 victor
at No. 2 singles.
Wong's classmate, Kelsey
Brewster, rounded out the women's winners with a 6-4, 7-5
triumph at No. 6 singles.
On the men's side, the No. 3 doubles team Michael Milanov
and Tim Lutz
opened the year with a 9-8 victory. Freshman Vladimir
Daskalov then won 6-0, 6-2 at No. 5 singles.
The SU men are back in action next Saturday in a tournament at
Bridgewater while the women are off until competing in the ITA
Tournament on September 25.
