WINCHESTER, Va. – The Shenandoah University men's tennis team opened up its 2014 spring season with a 9-0 non-league victory over Hood Saturday evening.
The Hornets (1-0) opened by sweeping Hood (0-6) in the doubles before clinching the victory with wins in the top three singles matches.
Sophomore Steven Baker led SU to the win by combining with Wes Licklider to win 8-1 at No. 1 doubles before winning 6-2, 6-3 in the top singles match.
Will Leach and Zach O'Neal were also double winners.
Leach was a 6-0, 6-2 victor at No. 2 singles and O'Neal won 6-1, 6-2 at No. 3
The two men won 8-2 at No. 2 doubles.
Brett Holmes and Kelly Sykes had the final win, downing Chad Love and Philip Roedig 8-1 at No. 3 doubles.
Sykes won 7-5, 6-1 at No. 4, Holmes 3-6, 6-4, 1-0 at No. 5 and Licklider 6-2, 6-3 at No. 6 to complete the sweep.
The men are now off until opening the ODAC campaign with a home match against Virginia Wesleyan on March 12.
